1031. Friday Morning (Sydney Carter) Video

This is the first of three songs I will be putting up for Easter.

Sydney Carter was a rather eccentric liberal Christian singer-songwriter. Some of his works were a bit too controversial for the more conservative elements in the Church of England.

This is Sydney Carter's most controversial song, and there were many calls for it to be banned by people who did not understand the irony, Conservative politician, Enoch Powell, being one example. The American Armed Forces even announced that they were removing it from their hymnal. Sydney Carter's comment: "Until somebody rang me up to say it had been taken out, I didn't even know it was there."

I was asked to sing some Sydney Carter songs, including this one, for an Easter celebration many years ago as a member of a church youth group. I remember this one caused some controversy among the older members of the congregation.

There's irony in it. He's telling about the crucifixion from the Good theif's point of view. He's also being ironic by saying "it's? God they ought to crucify," because they did.

This is a very wonderful song, and it's a shame that some people won't give it a chance.? It has some very nice and clever turns of phrase. Of course, what the narrator doesn't realize that it IS God they're crucifying, and I feel that there've been times when we all find ourselves in the same position as the thief on the cross.

Irony is a very interesting concept, Max. It got me into some trouble with Eric? Bogle's song, "I Hate Wogs". Even after my ten-minute explanation, I still sometimes get comments from people who just don't get it.

Yeah I can see it ...
Yeah I can see it might have been a bit in-yer-face for some folk but the basic premise? of the song is a really beautiful touch of irony - the point is that although the guy misses the point in one respect, in that God made the world and gave man freedom of choice, he's absolutely spot on in a way that he doesn't even realise.
